Today is the first day of fall in the northern hemisphere. Fall is one of my favorite seasons. Besides the opportunity for stunning fall photography as the leaves change color, and the sky turns bluer, it’s harvest time. And that means making and eating delicious treats like caramel apples, cider, pumpkin pie, and putting up the garden’s bounty to enjoy long into winter.
Fall also means Halloween and Thanksgiving with some of our favorite treats, and always with some of our favorite people.
Fall holidays are all about fun, family, food, and connection. And did I mention those beautiful colored leaves that allow me to enjoy creating stunning fall photography?
As I prepare to head up in the beautiful Colorado Rockies where the leaves are turning, here are a few of my favorite fall photos from the past few seasons.
What’s your favorite part of fall?

Autumn is a season followed immediately by looking forward to Spring. — Elizabeth Bowen“Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.” –Unknown“It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves!” –Winnie the Pooh“How beautiful the leaves grow old. How full of light and color are their last days.” — John Burroughs
“It was a beautiful, bright autumn day, with air like cider and a sky so blue you could drown in it.” — Diana Gabaldon, Outlander
“Autumn leaves are falling, filling up the streets; golden colors on the lawn, nature’s trick or treat!” — Rusty Fischer“I hope I can be the autumn leaf, who looked at the sky and lived. And when it was time to leave, gracefully it knew life was a gift.” — Dodinsky“Everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn.” –Unknown“Autumn is the season to find contentment at home by paying attention to what we already have.”
What do May flowers bring? Happy photographers, of course (and you thought I was going to say Pilgrims!). Now that we are fully into spring, there are beautiful blooms everywhere I look in Colorado. With a warm and sunny forecast, it was time for me to get out and photograph those may flowers while…
Spring is here and I don’t know how it is where you are, but we’re supposed to have another amazing bright and sunny Colorado spring day. One of the things I love most about spring is the color. The trees are beginning to leaf, many of them here are already in full bloom, especially the…
It’s December 31st, New Year’s Eve, and it seems traditional to do a little retrospective of the year. I could rehash my 10 favorite blog posts, I could talk about my 10 most embarrassing moments or I could talk about 10 goals that I achieved. I don’t actually have a list of my 10 favorite…
I don’t know of many photographic techniques that create more drama than a silhouette. Besides just being cool, they can add visual interest to an otherwise mundane subject. I have photographed nearly everything I can find in silhouette over the years. I love the way it reduces a subject down to shape and form. I…
As a longtime portrait and wedding photographer, my favorite subject to photograph has long been flowers. Yes, flowers. I really do love photographing people but when you are working with people all day every day, having a subject that doesn’t talk back, doesn’t throw a temper tantrum and just sits there looking pretty, is a…
